FALL 2026
Bouboulina: The Musical is an epic theatrical experience that brings to life the extraordinary journey of Laskarina Bouboulina, a fearless naval commander who defied the conventions of her time and became a driving force in Greece’s fight for independence.
Born in a prison in Constantinople and raised on the island of Spetses, Bouboulina defied societal expectations from a young age. She was not just a wife and mother—she was an educated woman, a skilled sailor, and a strategic leader who commanded her own fleet in battle. The musical follows her transformation from a bold young woman who dared to dream beyond the constraints of her era to the indomitable leader who led naval forces against the Ottoman Empire.
Through moments of love, loss, betrayal, and triumph, Bouboulina: The Musical showcases her alliances with revolutionaries, the sacrifices she made for her country, and her relentless pursuit of freedom, even in the face of personal tragedy. Set against a backdrop of stirring Greek folk melodies, sweeping orchestral compositions, and vibrant choreography, the story unfolds as a powerful testament to resilience, leadership, and the fight for justice.
Laskarina Bouboulina (1771-1825) was one of the most remarkable figures of the Greek War of Independence. At a time when women had little agency in society, Bouboulina broke every barrier. She inherited a vast fortune from her late husbands, which she used to secretly build ships, stockpile weapons, and fund the revolution. She became the only woman in history to be given the rank of admiral in the Russian navy, and she played a key role in some of the most critical battles of the war.
Her flagship, the Agamemnon, was one of the largest warships of the time, and her forces were instrumental in the sieges of Nafplio and Tripolitsa. Bouboulina’s bravery and strategic brilliance earned her the respect of Greek revolutionaries and foreign allies alike. However, despite her contributions, she was ultimately betrayed and assassinated, a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by those who dared to challenge the status quo.
Today, Bouboulina remains a symbol of female empowerment, leadership, and patriotism. Her legacy endures in Greece, where statues and museums honor her memory, and her story continues to inspire people around the world.
The journey to creating Bouboulina: The Musical began with Maria Vasiliou’s lifelong passion for storytelling and her deep connection to Greek history and culture. Having grown up immersed in traditional Greek folk music and dance, Maria always sought ways to bring these elements to the stage in a way that would resonate with modern audiences.
Her inspiration for the musical was sparked by a childhood experience of seeing Riverdance, which ignited a desire to create a show celebrating her own heritage. But it wasn’t until she attended a Greek folk dance competition with her children that she had an epiphany—Laskarina Bouboulina was the story she had been waiting for.
Determined to bring this legendary figure to life, Maria embarked on extensive research, traveling to Spetses, where she met Bouboulina’s sixth-generation great-grandson, Pavlos Demertzis-Bouboulis. This meeting deepened her understanding of Bouboulina’s personal history and provided invaluable insights into the woman behind the legend.
By blending historical accuracy with theatrical artistry, Maria seeks to present a narrative that is both entertaining and educational. Through sweeping musical numbers, dramatic storytelling, and rich cultural elements, Bouboulina: The Musical is not just a retelling of history—it is a celebration of resilience, courage, and the power of one woman’s voice in shaping a nation’s destiny.

Maria’s personal and professional journey has uniquely positioned her to tell the story of Laskarina Bouboulina. Growing up in a family with deep Greek roots, she was surrounded by the melodies, traditions, and history of her ancestors. From a young age, she was drawn to the stories of those who fought for their freedom, particularly the untold narratives of women who shaped history. Her love for music and movement was ignited by early experiences with folk dance, and she has since dedicated her career to weaving these cultural elements into theatrical storytelling.
The inspiration for Bouboulina: The Musical was a culmination of her lifelong passions. After years of teaching, performing, and directing, Maria sought a story that would not only showcase the power of Greek music and dance but also highlight a historical figure who embodied resilience, intelligence, and leadership. The moment of realization came while attending a Greek folk dance competition with her children. Standing in the midst of the music and movement that had always been a part of her life, she recognized that Bouboulina was more than a historical figure—she was a voice echoing through time, waiting to be heard again.
Maria’s journey to honor Bouboulina took her to the heroine’s homeland of Spetses, where she met with her sixth-generation great-grandson, Pavlos Demertzis-Bouboulis. This meeting reinforced her belief that Bouboulina’s story was not just history; it was living, breathing inspiration, demanding to be shared on the stage.
In Bouboulina: The Musical, Maria fuses her expertise in music, theater, and education with her deep cultural and historical knowledge. She brings authenticity to the narrative, not only through rigorous research but through an innate understanding of what it means to be a woman who defies expectations. Just as Bouboulina commanded her own fleet in an era where women were meant to remain silent, Maria commands the stage with a vision that challenges and inspires.
For Maria, Bouboulina is more than a musical—it is a calling. It is a way to honor the past while inspiring the future, to give voice to those who history often forgets, and to remind the world that true leadership is born from passion, courage, and an unwavering belief in something greater than oneself.
